It was the perfect murder... almost.
An elderly woman is found murdered in her apartment. Cause of death; a single gunshot wound to the chest. The only door is locked from the inside. There are no signs of entry, no bullet holes in the walls, and no weapon is recovered from the scene. That’s when Detective Lana Denae of the Portland Police Bureau is assigned the case. The investigation gets off to a slow start until she realizes there is more to the story than a single random murder. Someone is looking to rake in a profit to the tune of more than a million dollars, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Lana is determined to stop the killer before he strikes again but with limited evidence, finding just who is responsible is more difficult than she imagined.

Dead Broke is an adequate story that has potential for better. But it's well buried. Even six bridge jumpers couldn't improve the boring start. The title needed those poor people investing borrowed funds and then jumping to their deaths, but once the deaths were established to be murders, the plot never resolved that foundational peculiarity while also ignoring why they would have gone to the bridge at 4am.It's not just that logic gap but the characters that make no sense. Lana Denae is a less-than-stellar, not-very-personable detective. With the flat joking around by her comrades, I can't believe they are series characters. At the site of the first murder, the building manager repeatedly shows up to protest the police presence at the property. Nellie, friend of the shooting victim and key witness to the first "suicide" murder, willfully withholds evidence because it wasn't directly requested. The police shrink repeatedly proposes stereotypical killer profiles to Lana's disdain, whereas Lana's reaction is to want to be friends with one suspect's attorney, who vacillates between belligerent, obstructionistic, and manipulative. Too often those minor characters came across as unnecessary and unbelievable rather than quirky supportive points of view.
Add to that the elaborate (and again-unresolved) "sting" operation, a couple procedurally questionable investigative strategies, and an unrealistic confession rounding out the plot failures, Dead Broke might have been more fortunate to have jumped right off the Steel Bridge into the Willamette River along with its "suicide" victims. Unless you want to write the better version buried in the mess, there's really no need to waste your reading time on this one. But the writing isn't awful.

Dead Broke Lana Denae Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Bruce A Borders Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
A quick weekend read. Great characters who didn't need much development. Enough twists and plot turns to keep the pages flipping. The suspects were many the nephew, the hacker, the maintenance man, the investor... all had motive but who done it?
This has been the most interesting mystery that I have read in a very long time. Fast paced, well written, good dialogue and kept me guessing. Hope to read more of this author.
A story full of intrigue, mystery, suspense, and interesting characters. Lana is the main detective who is believable and likeable. The main suspect in the seven murders leaves the reader if he is guilty or is working for the real killer. Well written and a page turner. An interesting twist to the ending. A great read.
Dead Broke is a murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. Detective Lana Denae works alone, after her partner died. She quickly connects two open cases. How did a woman get shot in a locked room? Why were people jumping to their death off a local bridge? Lana teams up with other detectives and finds clues that don’t take her where she expected to go. Mr. Borders wrote an enjoyable read that is for those who enjoy an interesting whodunit.
Every time you think you've got this one figured out, it turns out you're wrong. Strongly developed characters, unpredictable plot that holds you to the end - what more could you want in a detective story? I'm looking forward to seeing what Lana Denae will be up to next.
This book would be better named "The mystery of the 6 corpses". We start with a locked room mystery which evolves into a serial killer saga. The Portland pd which consists of a loopy psychiatrist,a tech guru capable of deciphering the Rosetta Stone,a grumpy Capt. and 3 jejune Detectives are on the job.A corpse is found in a hot locked room about 3 days old and is still stiff. Time of death is determined within 3 hours of demise as is the TOD of a water soaked corpse. Neither determination is remotely possible in the real world. We learn that 5 others have fallen or been pushed from a bridge 27 feet above the river. No cause of death is ever ascribed to their deaths. They were thrown apparently by someone who lured them to the bridge at 3am. Physical evidence is not described. The malefactor motivated by jealousy/revenge is covering up identity thefts. Why one feels that a surreptitious crime like identity theft needs to be concealed by a series of murders is not explained.Amateurish mistakes re circumstantial evidence abound and the solution to the locked room murder is absurd. The author needs technical help, and a better sense of humor.
This book was better than many I’ve read lately, including some by some long-established authors.
It was an interesting story with enough surprises to keep it from getting boring or predictable, but not so many that the reader says, “Enough is enough!”
On the down side, the highly omniscient POV never let me get close to Lana, the main character. I never felt that I got to know her. It also left me feeling like I was watching a TV show, seeing the action from across the room instead of being next to the characters, experiencing it with them.
And that’s my second nit to pick there was action but no tension, no ‘Oh, my God, what’s gonna happen now?’ danger-filled moments. Lana and her fellow detectives go about their business, tracking down clues to the killer. While that is how things mostly are in real life, that’s not how readers want them to be in books.
But those things were not enough to make me put Borders on my ‘Never read again ever’ list.
