“The Spanish moss swayed eerily in the breeze that brought with it fat rain drops that plopped onto the water, rippling the reflection of the darkening sky. That was when we saw the cabin, far off in a corner on the west bank. It was as I had seen it in my dreams—rustic long-forgotten by the world, save for whatever occupied its malevolent little frame. And whatever it was, was nothing more than a black silhouette in a creaking rocking chair on the tiny porch. As I stared at the phantom rocker, it suddenly stopped in mid rock, picked up its head and turned to me, grinning, and started rocking away, never taking its yellow eyes off of me. And there, in the humid twilight of the swamp, a bitter chill washed over me, and my spine felt like ice.”
When Leigh Benoit returns home to Louisiana for the funeral of her brother and his wife, she becomes increasingly concerned about the welfare of her orphaned niece, Lyla. She is prompted by her grandmother, Clothilde, to move back to take care of her. Leigh has no desire to take on any responsibility, and being home again brings back painful memories. At the funeral, Leigh’s childhood friend, Detective Lucas Castille, tells her the mysterious details of the accident that killed her brother and his wife. Lucas’ young son has dreams of a Dark Man who wishes to harm Lyla. Leigh begins to have similar dreams. She struggles with her rational mind but vows to protect her niece. Soon, she finds out there is more to the story and more to her grandmother than she thought.

This is the first book that I have read from Ms. Duplechain and while I enjoyed the supernatural aspect of this book Immensely, it took me quite a few chapters to really get into it. I believe that to be mainly because of my dislike for the main character Leigh. Throughout the entire book, she was sulky, rude, self centered and very immature. I found at certain points I almost stopped reading the book because her character was grating on my nerves to the extreme. The rest of the main characters I really related to, especially her best friend Carrie who was the complete and total opposite of Leigh. I do have to give it to this Author that she was able to do something that not too many Authors are able to accomplish.... and that's to surprise me. There is a twist at the end of the book that I didn't see coming, I will refrain from mentioning it as I do not wish to spoil it for others who choose to read it. Kudos to you on that Ms.Duplechain. I gave this book 3 stars instead of 5 because I couldn't look past my dislike of the main protagonist Leigh. I'm hoping the second book improved that.Product details

Dark Bayou The Dark Trilogy Book 1 eBook Nancy K Duplechain Reviews
But the writing and characters need a little work. 3-1/2 Stars for me.
I have to say that I read this book straight through. It was an intriguing location and plot, which was unfortunately overshadowed by the style of writing. The point of view made the constant "I did this, and I did that" rather distracting for me. YA appropriate, no strong language or sexual situations. More to come, but the ending was not a cliffhanger.
This book was, however, still a decent read--it just needs a little polish. I will read the next book in the series to see where the storyline goes.
This story drew me in quick. The first night I read 71 pages. This story mixes myth, legend, and folklore to create a fantastic tail about the deep south and its people.
Leigh returns for her brother and sister in laws funeral to learn there is much about her family and herself than she ever thought possible. Lucas has had feelings for her every since they were young. He now has a son named Jonathan. Lyla is Leighs niece. Leigh grandmother is healer and each one of her friends has a very special ability and talent for taking on the dark forces that must help balance out the light. Leigh is made to face some hard choices about herself, her life and what she believes in. Lucas must do the same thing when he steps in to protect the people he cares about. There is a dark force called Lefonces that destroy, kill and cause people pain. These dark forces try to do that very thing to Leigh, Lula, Jonathan cause they are Paladins holy warriors to protect life and make sure it remains balanced. For the moment life and the spirits are in balance but Leigh, Lula, Lucas, Ben, Ceecee, Clothidle, and Jonathan will be called again to serve.
I look forward to reading book two in this series.
Bought this based on previous reviews and the very descriptive writing style from the book's sleeve. "The Spanish moss swayed eerily in the breeze that brought with it fat rain drops that plopped onto the water, rippling the reflection of the darkening sky." gave me the impression of "Anne Rice" light. This is good since Ms. Rice can get a little over indulgent and leaving the readers' senses so very overwhelmed you feel as if you can smell the sweat off of a full bloom magnolia amid a Garden District summer before leaving chapter one.
I was immediately hooked. Duplechain's style is simple and allowed me to get through the book quickly. There is an obvious love for Louisiana's culture and people in how she describes places, events and even local "quirks" but doesn't lose or isolate you with self-indulgence nor is there an attempt drippy unctuousness. There are punctuation and editing mistakes but this may be due to the materials transferred to eReader though I have not taken the time to compare to the actual book.
I did have an issue with the way the narrative was handled. As a person Leigh is a bit guarded yet I found it a little too easy to get into her head. Being in the first person narrative I understand it is from her point of view but it all felt a bit systematic especially towards the end. Having invested some time into Leigh's head I felt I should have cared about her a bit more.
I do not know if this was meant to be a YA novel, though I appreciated the PG-13 romance between Leigh and Lucas. It kept the focus on the "supernatural thriller" approach as well as allowing the reader to develop a relationship with Maw Maw Clothidle and her niece, Lyla. There are also no true horror, gore nor were there gripping suspense elements.
I also had issue with the way the supernatural aspect was handled. Maybe I am a bit biased (I lived in NOLA in my younger years) but I felt Ms. Duplechain could of used a little more region speak when it came to the occult. Having left home when she was in college I felt Leigh's head would have been more in touch with the local folklore rather than being so "fish-out-of-water". I did appreciate the breaking down of some of the Cajun-French expressions when it came to idioms and endearments but when explaining the paladins it felt a bit "too European". Not dumbed down Ms. Duplechain stayed with the within origins of Charlemange's court but since the magic migrated to Louisiana I would of thought there would be a bit more Voodoo.
There was also a part in the story where the descriptions felt a bit cartoonish. An attempt at exorcising Savoy ended up with "a pair of giant, monstrous hands" immediately made me think of elastic hands that stretch out in an anime as opposed to the engulfing darkness of a horror movie.
In short Dark Bayou was "okay" going on "like". A quick read, cared more about the supporting characters and the descriptions of the sugarcane fields rather than the protagonist but I am interested in what Ms. Duplechain has in store. There is a good story here and some good writing so I am certain she will find her footing very soon. I have already sampled Dark Carnival and like where it is going.
